Golf instruction throughout the years has had the same business model, offer group clinics at a low price to attract potential new students that will then inquire and take private instruction. Private instruction has often been viewed as the “premium” of golf instruction that will provide the most benefit and development for the student. However there are significant benefits that only occur in a group instruction format.
Private instruction offers one on one coaching which some students will prefer. The one on one experience allows the coach to provide feedback and guidance in multiple ways that are catered to the student’s individual learning style. The instruction tends to be more detailed and complex quite often focusing on very technical changes.. The students that thrive best in this atmosphere are self motivated, and willing to put in the work outside of the lesson to get the full benefit of the instruction and make long term improvement. This “hands on” approach comes at a premium in cost as well.
Group Instruction has major benefits that private instruction can not offer. The first benefit is cost savings vs. private instruction. Group classes are priced much more affordably with most 5 week programs costing between $150 and $300 depending on the program. But the benefits go beyond the financial aspect. Here a few others:
- Group Camaraderie – This is a huge benefit over private instruction in various ways. In a group class, students will see that they are not unique when it comes to struggling with learning of the new skill, so they will not get as frustrated. Additionally in a group setting, those that are succeeding will serve as models to others that are not. Finally a group setting can foster a competitive desire that may not have been discovered in the past. This competitive desire will act as a self motivator to continue further with your development.
- More Practice Time – In a group class, the actual time there is instruction conducted is very minimal. It is to the point and kept simple so that all can understand. The majority of the time is spent practicing what is being taught. This practice is done with supervision. The teacher observes and provides quick feedback before moving on to help the next student. The benefit of this is that the student spends a lot if time practicing their skills during the class and that is a huge factor in their long term development.
- More Self Discovery – Because the student spends the majority of the time in a group lesson practicing, there is a better chance of the student experiencing self discovery. When a student goes through self discovery, they feel ownership in their development. It is one of the most effective means to make long term changes. It also serves as motivation to further their development.
I have seen students improve at a faster rate by taking group instruction. I have also seen students who took a group class, did not like it and took private instruction afterwards and improved then. I personally feel if you are a beginner, the benefits of group instruction are tremendous and therefore I recommend it over private instruction.
